Liminal Climbing started as an idea by Pieter Nel and Iben Swarts at the humble walls of Maties Climbing. Training in a grungy shed on a spray wall with holds older than most of the people there sparked innovation. "What if we made our own holds?"

Pieter started designing and experimenting with shapes and fastened them on the wall for everyone to try. It instantly became a hit. Over the years Pieter was improving and innovating his shapes. Until one day he and his climbing partner, Iben, thought, "What if we could make a business out of this?"

So that is what the two of them did.

Liminal started using hardwood offcuts sourced from farmers, furniture makers, and backyards. The next step was adding some real rock from Rocklands and Cape Town to the wooden holds.

South Africans love board climbing, but all the premium wooden holds are sitting in Europe and North America. Liminal fixes this problem by bringing world-class wooden and stone holds to your home wall and gym.

Pieter and Iben are constantly looking for new ways to innovate the climbing scene, whether it is through crafting dope shapes or by creating unique collaborative projects.

Stay tuned to see how liminal fills this space.
